New Permanent Representative of Lithuania Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the United Nations, Raimonda Murmokaitė, presented her credentials today to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

From October 2009 until her latest appointment, Ms. Murmokaitė served as Director of the United Nations, International Organizations and Human Rights Department in Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  She was Ambassador–at-large in the Minister’s Office from August 2008 to September 2009.

During her previous service in New York, she was Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations between August 2004 and July 2008.  Ms. Murmokaitė previously served as Director of the Department of the Americas, Africa, Asia and Oceania from April 2003 to August 2004, prior to which she headed the Ministry’s Policy Planning Division from February 2001 to March 2003.

Ms. Murmokaitė was a Counsellor at Lithuania’s Embassy in Italy, from January 1998 to January 2001, having headed the West European Division at the Foreign Ministry between January 1996 and January 1998.  She worked in that Division as a Desk Officer until December 1995, having joined the Ministry in March 1994.

A Chevening Scholar in diplomatic and security studies at Birmingham University (1994) and an E. Muskie Scholar in public administration at the Monterey Institute of International Studies (1992-1993), Ms. Murmokaitė studied Romance-Germanic philology at Vilnius University from 1977 to 1982.

She was born on 17 July 1959.
