New Permanent Representative of South Sudan Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of South Sudan to the United Nations, Francis Deng, today presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Deng was the Special Adviser of the Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide from 1 August 2007 until 31 July 2012, having previously been his Representative on Internally Displaced Persons from 1992 to 2004.

Mr. Deng had previously served as Ambassador of the Sudan to Canada, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden and the United States, and as that country’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.  He was a Human Rights Officer in the United Nations Secretariat from 1967 to 1972.

The holder of three law degrees — a doctorate from Yale University, a master’s from London University and a bachelor’s from Khartoum University — Mr. Deng has received many awards, most recently Georgetown University’s 2011 Trainor Award for distinction in the conduct of diplomacy.
