Yuriy A. Sergeyev of Ukraine Chair of Sixth Committee

 


Yuriy A. Sergeyev, Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the United Nations, was elected Chair of the Sixth Committee (Legal and Administrative) on 4 September.  (See Press Release GA/L/3431)


Mr. Sergeyev has been Permanent Representative since May 2007.  Prior to that appointment, he was Ambassador to France since 2003, during which time he was also Permanent Representative to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).


Between 2001 and 2003, he was Secretary of State at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, a position he held after having served five months in 2001 as First Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs.  From 2000 to 2001, he was Director-General for Foreign Policy in the Administration of the President of Ukraine.


Between 1997 and 2000, Mr. Sergeyev was Ambassador to Greece and Albania, prior to which he had served as Minister Counsellor at his country’s Embassy in the United Kingdom for 11 months in 1997.  He twice headed the Foreign Ministry’s Directorate for Information, first from late 1993 to mid 1994, and again from late 1994 to early 1997.  He was Director of the Secretariat of the Minister for Foreign Affairs from August to December 1994, and Director of the Foreign Ministry’s Press Service from 1992 to 1993.


Mr. Sergeyev earned a doctorate at T. Shevchenko Kyiv State University in 1981.


Born on 5 February 1956 in Leninakan, Armenia, Mr. Sergeyev is married.
