New Permanent Representative of Myanmar Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Myanmar to the United Nations, Thant Kyaw, presented his credentials today to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
In an extensive diplomatic career, Mr. Kyaw served alternately in a number of posts both overseas and at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Yangon. From 2010 until his latest appointment, he was Ambassador to Belgium, with simultaneous accreditation to the Netherlands, the European Union and the European Commission.
Between 2008 and 2010, Mr. Kyaw was Director-General of the International Organizations and Economic Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, having been Deputy Director-General from 2007 to 2008. He served as Minister Counsellor in Myanmar’s Tokyo Embassy beginning in 2005 until 2007.
Mr. Kyaw was Director of the Americas Division in the Foreign Ministry’s Political Department from 2004 to 2005, and Director of the Europe Division between 2001 and 2003. Between service as a Counsellor in Kuala Lumpur (1997-2001) and First Secretary in Hanoi (1991-1995), he served a first term as Deputy Director of the International Organizations and Economic Department between 1995 and 1997.
Prior to his appointment as Assistant Director of the Americas Division (1988-1991), Mr. Kyaw served as Third Secretary in Washington, D.C., from 1983 to 1987, having joined the foreign service in 1980.
Mr. Kyaw holds a Bachelor of Science degree in physics from the Arts and Science University in Yangon.
Born on 6 March 1953 in Bago, Myanmar, he is married and has a daughter.
