(Based on information provided by the Protocol and Liaison Service)

The new Permanent Representative of Saint Lucia to the United Nations, Menissa Rambally, presented her credentials today to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

She was appointed Permanent Representative for Saint Lucia to the United Nations after her party - the Saint Lucia Labour Party - won a majority of the seats in the House of Assembly in the general election of December 2011 and formed a new government.  Her party was defeated in the general election of December 2006 and, in the interim, she worked full-time in the wider Caribbean region as a political consultant and social policy advisor on social programmes and initiatives, serving several governments, including overseeing the creation of a system of local governance in Barbados.

First elected to Saint Lucia’s Parliament in 1997 at age 21, becoming the youngest elected Member of Parliament (MP) in the Caribbean and the wider Commonwealth, she went on to be re-elected to two more consecutive terms – 1997-2001; and 2001-2006.  Between 1997 and 1999, she served as a member of the cabinet of the government of Saint Lucia; was Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation; Acting Minister of Health, Gender Relations and Family Affairs; Acting Minister for Education, Human Resource Development, Youth and Sports; and served as Acting Minister for Commerce, Industry and Consumer Affairs.

From 2000-2001, Ms Rambally served as Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation; and was Minister for Social Transformation, Culture and Local Government from 2001-2006.

She holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Andrews University, USA (1996) and an Associates of Science degree from the same University, (1995).

Born in Saint Lucia on 16 January 1976, Ms. Rambally is single.
