New Permanent Representative of Spain Presents Credentials

Fernando Arias González, the new Permanent Representative of Spain to the United Nations, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today.

Until his appointment, Mr. Arias served as Minister Counsellor and Deputy Chief of Mission at his country’s Embassy in China from 2009, and Ambassador to Bulgaria between 2004 and 2009.  From 2000 to 2004, he was Director-General of the Protocol Department in the Office of the Prime Minister.

Mr. Arias served simultaneously as Ambassador to Mauritania and Mali from 1998 to 2000.  Between 1994 and 1998, he was Minister Counsellor and Deputy Chief of Mission at Spain’s Embassy in Argentina, having held the same position in Mexico.  Before that time, he served as Chief Administrative Officer and Deputy Director General at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, from 1987 to 1990.  He was a Counsellor in Romania between 1983 and 1987, after having served as First Secretary and Cultural Counsellor in the Netherlands in his first overseas posting.

A career diplomat since 1979, Mr. Arias holds a law degree from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and a certificate in international studies from the Diplomatic School in the Spanish capital.

He was born in Madrid.
