New Permanent Representative of Cyprus Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the United Nations, Nicholas Emiliou, today presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Until his appointment, Mr. Emiliou was Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nicosia from August 2008.  Between June 2004 and July 2008, he was Permanent Representative to the European Union in Brussels, having previously served as Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg from August 2002.

Mr. Emiliou was Ambassador to Ireland between July 1999 and September 2002, and served briefly as Deputy Permanent Delegate to the European Union from July 1998 to June 1999.  He was Minister Plenipotentiary in the European Union Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs until June 1998, having been promoted to that rank in March 1997.

He holds a PhD in law from University College, London, and a master’s degree in European Law from the London School of Economic and Political Science.

Born in Famagusta, Cyprus, on 14 June 1963, he is married.
