Biographical Note

New Permanent Representative of Zambia Presents Credentials

Patricia Mwaba Kasese-Bota, the new Permanent Representative of Zambia to the United Nations, presented her credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today.

Prior to her appointment, Dr. Kasese-Bota served as HIV Orphans and Vulnerable Children and Youth Adviser at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), from July 2008 until November 2011.  She also chaired the United States Government Orphans and Vulnerable Children Committee and the Care and Support Technical Working Group.  While managing USAID-funded Orphans and Vulnerable Children projects, she was a member of the Palliative Care Technical Working Group in the Ministry of Health.

From January 2007 to July 2008, Dr. Kasese-Bota was a consultant to the Zambia Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect, having been seconded by the Ministry of Health to work at the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) as an HIV/AIDS Officer and Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission Specialist from May 2005 to December 2006.  She held several positions at the Health Ministry between 1996 and 2004, among them Programmes Manager at the National AIDS Council and General Medical Officer and Epidemiologist.

Dr. Kasese-Bota received her medical training at the University of Zambia, and earned her Master of Public Health, with an epidemiology major focused on HIV research, from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in the United States.

Born on 16 May 1969, she is married and has three children.
