Commission for Social Development Takes Up Five Draft Resolutions

as It Approaches End of Forty-Ninth Session

The Commission for Social Development took up five draft resolutions today as it approached the end of its forty-ninth session, built around the theme of poverty eradication.

On behalf of the “Group of 77” developing countries and China, the representative of Argentina introduced a text titled “Social dimensions of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development” (document E/CN.5/2011/L.7), an offshoot of the Commission’s agenda item 3 — “Follow-up to the World Summit for Social Development and the twenty-fourth special session of the General Assembly”.

The Commission then took up sub-item 3 (b), “Review of relevant United Nations plans and programmes of action pertaining to the situation of social groups”, with the representative of the Republic of Moldova tabling a draft headed “Policies and programmes involving youth” (document E/CN.5/2011/L.4).  The representative of Argentina presented, on behalf of the Group of 77 and China, a text titled “Preparations for and observance of the twentieth anniversary of the International Year of the Family” (document E/CN.5/2011/L.6).

Turning to its organization of work, the Commission took up two draft resolutions tabled by its Vice-Chairpersons and titled, respectively, “Modalities for the second review and appraisal of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing, 2002” (document E/CN.5/2011/L.3), and “Further promotion of equalization of opportunities by, for and with persons with disabilities and mainstreaming disability in the development agenda”, (document E/CN.5/2011/L.5).

So far during the session, delegates have heard anti-poverty experts discuss efforts to shape new approaches to helping the 900 million people who remain mired in extreme poverty by 2015, the target year for the realization of the Millennium Development Goals, the first of which aims to halve extreme poverty.

The Commission will reconvene at 10 a.m. tomorrow, Friday, 18 February, to take action on the draft resolutions as it concludes the forty-ninth session.  It is also expected to convene the first meeting of its fiftieth session to elect the Chair and Vice-Chairs of its Bureau.
