Secretary-General Stresses Importance of ‘Peaceful, Credible, Transparent’
Liberian Elections, as Second Round of Presidential Balloting Approaches
The following statement was issued today by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:
The Secretary-General is closely following developments related to the second round of the presidential elections in Liberia, scheduled to take place on 8 November 2011.
The Secretary-General supports the joint efforts of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and his Special Representative for Liberia to promote dialogue among the Liberian stakeholders, in an effort to build confidence in the electoral process. He urges all Liberians not to resort to violence despite political disagreement, and to ensure that the peace in Liberia is maintained.
The Secretary-General stresses the importance of peaceful, credible, transparent elections and reaffirms the readiness of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) to support the Liberian authorities, in accordance with its mandate.
