Secretary-General Thanks Japan for Contribution
to United Nations Mission in South Sudan
The following statement was issued today by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:
The Secretary-General welcomes the decision of the Government of Japan to contribute one engineering company to the United Nations Mission in South Sudan. This engineering company is due to begin deployment in January 2012 and will provide a crucial capacity for the Mission’s mandate to assist the Government of South Sudan to build its basic infrastructure and extend State authority.
The Secretary-General expresses his sincere gratitude for the strong commitment shown by Japan to peacekeeping and particularly acknowledges this contribution at a time when Japan is still recovering from the earthquake in March 2011.
