Alarmed by Deteriorating Security Situation in Sudan’s Southern Kordofan State,

 

Secretary-General Calls on All Concerned to Cease Hostilities

 

The following statement was issued on 11 June by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:

The Secretary-General is alarmed at the deterioration of the security situation and escalation of fighting in Southern Kordofan, which has left thousands homeless.  He calls on all concerned to cease hostilities and provide their full cooperation to UNMIS [United Nations Mission in the Sudan] and humanitarian agencies in addressing the needs of affected civilians.

The Secretary-General also remains deeply concerned about the situation in Abyei and the fate of those affected by the conflict in the area.  He welcomes the forthcoming meetings of the parties in Addis Ababa to address the situation in Abyei, South Kordofan and Blue Nile States, as well as other outstanding security issues under the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.  The Secretary-General stresses the importance of these meetings and urges the parties to demonstrate the political will and flexibility necessary to reach agreements that will bring peace to the area.
