Secretary-General Welcomes Honduras’ Return to Organization of American States

The following statement was issued on 1 June by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:

The Secretary-General welcomes the resolution adopted today by the General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) reinstating Honduras into the regional organization.

He welcomes the efforts of the member States that helped find a solution, in particular, those of the Governments of Colombia and Venezuela which facilitated the Cartagena Agreement on “national reconciliation and consolidation of the democratic system in Honduras”.

The Secretary-General is hopeful that today’s developments at the OAS and the upcoming report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission will contribute to healing the wounds of the recent past, and to bringing the people of Honduras together once again.
