On Inauguration of Niger’s President, Secretary-General Expresses United Nations
Readiness to Support Country in Addressing Post-Transition Challenges
The following statement was issued today by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:
The Secretary-General welcomes today’s inauguration of a democratically elected President in Niger as a landmark achievement in the restoration of democratic and constitutional order in the country. He commends the transitional authorities and the people of Niger as a whole for the peaceful and responsible manner in which they have implemented the transition initiated on 18 February 2010.
The United Nations has actively encouraged and supported the return to constitutional order in Niger. The Secretary-General expresses the readiness of the United Nations to support the new Government of President Mahamadou Issoufou and the people of Niger as they embark on addressing post-transition challenges, including promoting national reconciliation and development, and consolidating stability.
