Security Council Adopts Annual Report to Assembly for Year Ending 31 July 2011

The Security Council this morning adopted its annual report to the General Assembly for the period 1 August 2010 to 31 July 2011.

In opening remarks, Council President U. Joy Ogwu ( Nigeria) said the Introduction of the draft report had been prepared by the delegation of Germany as President of the Council in July 2010, with the participation of the other members of the Council.  The body of the report had been prepared by the Secretariat.

Expressing appreciation to Germany and the Secretariat for their respective contributions, the President pointed out that the draft report was prepared in accordance with the note by the President of 26 July 2010 (document S/2010/507).

German Ambassador Peter Wittig said the report (document A/66/2) contained a comprehensive account of all meetings and activities of the Council, as well as the Council’s discussions covering a wide range of thematic areas.  He hoped the report would show that the Council had exercised its mandate expediently in the face of many challenges before it.  During the drafting process of the Introduction, he had relied mainly on the monthly assessments and views expressed by Council members.  The report had been revised several times following their comments to ensure that it actually reflected the Council’s work.

States had had the opportunity to review and reach agreement on the draft report prior to the meeting, he said, expressing gratitude to all current and former Council members for their input.  He had built on the good practice by former Council Presidents of holding an informal meeting with the wider United Nations membership.  That meeting had not only been useful for input received, but had also fostered a good relationship between Council members and non-members, especially since non-members had increasingly expressed interest in the 15-nation body’s work.  He thanked the Secretariat for its invaluable support in compiling the report.

The report was adopted without a vote.  That action would be reflected in a note by the Council President, to be issued as document S/2011/664.

The meeting began at 10:21 a.m. and was adjourned at 10:27 a.m.
