Security Council Authorizes Three-Month Extension of Temporary Redeployment

from Liberia Mission to United Nations Operation in Côte d’Ivoire

The Security Council today authorized a three-month extension of the temporary redeployment of infantry and aviation units from the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) to the Organization’s Operation in Côte d’Ivoire, known as UNOCI.

Unanimously adopting resolution 1968 (2011), the Council also requested the support of troop- and police-contributing countries in extending the redeployment of the units, specified as three infantry companies, one aviation unit comprising two military utility helicopters and three armed helicopters with crews.

The Council authorized the initial redeployment by adopting resolution 1951 of 24 November 2010 after the Secretary-General requested it to reinforce ONUCI ahead of the presidential run-off election.  Following the crisis resulting from the disputed results of that poll, the Council twice extended the temporary measures, the last time on 19 January through resolution 1967 (2011), when it also authorized the redeployment of the armed helicopters and other augmentations to UNOCI.

Today’s meeting began at 3:15 p.m. and ended at 3:17 p.m.
