Continuing 2011 Session, Committee on United Nations Charter
Elects Additional Members to Bureau
The Special Committee on the Charter of the United Nations and on the Strengthening of the Role of the Organization today elected additional members of its bureau, as it continued its 2011 session, which runs at Headquarters from 28 February to 9 March.
By acclamation, Esmaeil Baghaei Hamaneh of Iran, nominated by the Asian Group, was elected Vice-Chairman, and Hilding Lundkvist of Sweden, nominated by the Western European and Other States Group, was elected Rapporteur.
The Special Committee on the Charter was established at the General Assembly’s thirtieth session to examine suggestions and proposals regarding the Organization’s founding document and strengthening of the role of the United Nations in the maintenance and consolidation of international peace and security, the development of cooperation among all nations and the promotion of the rules of international law.
Under the terms of General Assembly resolution 65/31 of December 2010, the Special Committee was mandated to consider this session, on a priority basis, questions related to assistance to third States affected by the application of sanctions and any proposal referred to it by the Assembly related to the decisions of the High-level Plenary Meeting of the sixtieth session of the Assembly in September 2005 that concern the Charter, among other continuing concerns.
Following the plenary session this morning, the Committee continued its proceedings in the Working Group of the Whole.
The Special Committee will meet again on Wednesday 9 March to conclude the 2011 session.
