New Permanent Representative of Federated States of Micronesia Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of the Federated States of Micronesia to the United Nations, Jane J. Chigiyal, presented her credentials today to UN Secretary‑General Ban Ki‑moon.
Before her appointment, Ms. Chigiyal served as Deputy Secretary in the Federated States of Micronesia’s department of Foreign Affairs between December 2009 and August 2011.
Between 1991 and 2009 she held other posts within her country’s Department of Foreign Affairs. She was Assistant Secretary in the Division of the Americas and Europe, and Deputy Assistant Secretary in both the Americas Subdivision and the Multilateral Subdivision. She also served as a Foreign Service Officer in the Asian Subdivision and the South Pacific Subdivision.
Among other responsibilities, she was named the Government’s Alternate Competent Authority to USAID, on the matter of Disaster Preparedness and Response, serving also as Chairperson of the Government Task Force on the Universal Periodic Review. She has also served as a member of various committees, including the Government’s Grievance Ad Hoc Committee, and the President’s National Advisory Council on Children, and was a member of the country’s Climate Change Country Team and the National Panel on Biodiversity.
Ms. Chigiyal has a Master of Arts degree in international relations and trade (1997) from Monash University, Australia, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in public administration (1990) from California State University, Chico. She also holds an Associate of Arts degree in liberal arts from Lassen Community College, Susanville (1987).
She was born on 3 April 1967, and is married.
