New Permanent Representative of Mexico Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Mexico to the United Nations, Luis Alfonso de Alba Góngora, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today.

Until his appointment, Mr. de Alba was his country’s Special Representative for Climate Change since August 2009.  Between March 2004 and July 2009, he served as Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, Switzerland, having previously been Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York from 2002 to 2004.

Between 1998 and 2001, Mr. de Albaheld the post of Director-General for the United Nations in Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, before which he served as Deputy Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States in Washington, D.C., from 1994 to 1998.

Joining the foreign service in 1983, he held various positions in the Foreign Ministry, including Director for Humanitarian Affairs (1991-1993); Adviser to the Minister for Foreign Affairs (1988); and Third Secretary at the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York (1983-1986).

Born in Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco State, Mexico in 1957, Mr. de Alba holds a bachelor’s degree from the Institut d’Etudes des Relations Internationales in Paris, France, and speaks Spanish, English and French.

He is married and has three children.
