New Permanent Representative of El Salvador Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of El Salvador to the United Nations, Joaquín Alexander Maza Martelli, presented his credentials today to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Since 2010, Mr. Martelli served as the Ambassador, Permanent Representative of El Salvador to the Organization of American States (OAS).  He was also President of the organization’s Permanent Council from September 2009 until April 2010.

Prior to his work with OAS, Mr. Martelli worked extensively in the Government of El Salvador, including as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Director-General of Foreign Affairs, 1986-1989, and later Director-General of Foreign Policy 2009-2010, and 1983.  Among other diplomatic posts, Mr. Martelli served as El Salvador’s Ambassador in Colombia (2005-2009) and Panama (1984).

From 1981 until 1983, he was the Chargé d’Affairs at the embassy of El Salvador in Nicaragua.  Additionally, he served as the First Minister Counsellor of the Embassy of El Salvador in Honduras and Coordinator for its opening immediately following the Peace Treaty (1981).

Also in 1980, Mr. Martelli took on the post of Chargé d’Affairs at El Salvador’s Embassy in Mexico.  He was First Secretary and Consul General at the Embassy and Consulate of El Salvador in the United Kingdom from 1977 to 1980.

He studied foreign affairs at the University of El Salvador (1970-1974) and earlier attended the University for general studies (1968-1970).  He received several diplomatic honours throughout his career, including the National Honour of the Republic of China (Great Star of South), the Decoration of the Central American Chamber and Caribbean with the Ruben Dario Honour, and the Decoration San Carlos Honour from Colombia.

A Salvadoran national, Mr. Martelli is divorced, with two children.
