New Permanent Representative of Tunisia Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Tunisia to the United Nations, Othman Jerandi, presented his credentials today to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Jerandi was Tunisia’s Ambassador to Jordan, from September 2010, before which he was Chargé de Mission in the cabinet of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, from 2008 to September 2010.

Mr. Jerandi served as Director-General of International Organizations and Conferences from 2005 to 2008.  Before that, he served as Tunisia’s Ambassador to the Republic of Korea in Seoul, from 2002 to 2005.

The new envoy, who has extensive diplomatic experience spanning more than 30 years, also served as his country’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, from 2000 to 2002, at a time when his country served as an elected member of the Security Council.  Mr. Jerandi was twice elected chairman of the Commission on the Status of Women, on which he served in 2002.

From 1998 to 2000, he was Director of Political, Economic and Cooperation Affairs with Africa and the African Union.  From 1994 to 1997, Mr. Jerandi served as Ambassador to Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone and Liberia, with residence in Lagos, Nigeria.  Prior to that, from 1990 to 1994, he was Counsellor in the Permanent Mission of Tunisia to the United Nations in New York.

From 1988 to 1990, he held the post of Counsellor in the Cabinet of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, having earlier held the post of First Secretary in the Tunisian Embassy in Kuwait, from 1981 to 1988.  From 1979 to 1981, he was Secretary of Foreign Affairs in Tunis.

The new Ambassador holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication and has studied French literature.  He is fluent in English, French and Arabic.

Born in Hammam Lif, Tunisia, Mr. Jerandi is married with two children.
