New Permanent Representative of Mauritius Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Mauritius to the United Nations, Jaya Nyamrajsingh Meetarbhan, today presented his credentials to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Meetarbhan served since 1995 as senior adviser of the Prime Minister of Mauritius on policy and strategic issues, having spent the major part of his professional career in the public service, at national and international levels.

Ahead of his career in Mauritius, the new Ambassador served for four years as an Executive in the Legal Department of International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) headquarters in Paris.  He has long been involved in developing the country’s financial services sector and was appointed Chief Executive of Mauritius’ Financial Services Commission in December 2005.  He acted as legal adviser to the Ministry of Finance from 1986 to 1990 and was involved in setting up the Stock Exchange of Mauritius.  He was subsequently appointed as a member of the Stock Exchange Commission, and Chairperson of the Financial Services Consultative Committee, set up by the Government in 1997 to review comprehensive financial services sector legislation.

Prior to his December 2005 appointment at the Financial Services Commission, Mr. Meetarbhan was a corporate attorney.  He was also an Associate Professor of Law and Head of the Law School of the University of Mauritius.

Mr. Meetarbhan holds a doctorate degree in international law from Sorbonne University in Paris.

Born on 2 July 1954, he is married with three children.
