The following statement was issued today by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:
The Secretary-General is deeply alarmed to learn of today’s attack by unidentified armed men against a UNAMID [African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur] military convoy, comprised of Egyptian peacekeepers, near Katila Village in South Darfur. The attack resulted in the death of two and serious injuries to three UNAMID peacekeepers. The Secretary-General calls on the Government of Sudan to launch an immediate investigation into this incident and to identify, apprehend and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The Secretary-General expresses his condolences to the Government of Egypt and to the families of the two peacekeepers who have lost their lives in the pursuit of peace in Darfur. He also wishes those wounded in the incident a speedy and full recovery.
