Secretary-General Appoints Youssef Mahmoud of Tunisia Special Representative

for United Nations Mission in Central African Republic and Chad

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today announced the appointment of Youssef Mahmoud of Tunisia as his Special Representative for the United Nations Mission in the Central African Republic and Chad (MINURCAT), effective from 1 June 2010.

Mr. Mahmoud will succeed Victor da Silva Angelo of Portugal, who served until the end of March 2010.  The Secretary-General is grateful to Mr. da Silva Angelo for his dedicated service.

After arriving in Chad on 21 March to lead a delegation from United Nations Headquarters in discussions with the Chadian authorities on the future of MINURCAT, Mr. Mahmoud had been Acting Special Representative since 1 April.  He previously served for three years as Executive Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Integrated Office in Burundi (BINUB).  He also assumed the responsibilities of Deputy Special Representative with the peacekeeping mission that preceded BINUB.

Since joining the United Nations in 1981, Mr. Mahmoud has held several senior positions, including United Nations Resident Coordinator in Guyana and Director in the Department of Political Affairs.  He has also held posts with the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia and in the Office of Human Resources Management at New York Headquarters.

Born on 7 August 1947, Mr. Mahmoud is married and has two children.
