Khawla Mattar of Bahrain Appointed Director of United Nations
Information Centre in Cairo
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is pleased to announce the appointment of Khawla Mattar as Director of the United Nations Information Centre in Cairo, Egypt. She assumed her new duties on 1 February 2010.
Ms. Mattar, a national of Bahrain, has most recently held the position of Senior Specialist with the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Beirut, promoting the basic international standards under the auspices of the ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work. She has extensive experience as a journalist, most recently, from September 2005 to August 2006, as the Editor-in-Chief for Al Waqt Daily. From February 1996 to August 2005, she was a Regional Information Officer for ILO in Beirut, and from September 1993 to February 1995, she was the Regional Information Officer for the Arab Council for Childhood and Development in Cairo.
In addition to the above assignments, she was a reporter/editor for the Middle East Broadcasting Centre in London (1990-1993); the editor for Gulf Panorama Magazine (1987-1989); a reporter/photo editor with the Associated Press in Bahrain (1985-1987); a reporter/editor for the Akhbar Al Khaleej Daily (1983-1985); and a correspondent for the Al Khaleej Newspaper in Bahrain (1981-1983).
Born in 1957, Ms. Mattar holds a PhD in the sociology of the media from Durham University in the United Kingdom.
