Secretary-General Appoints Bo Schack of Denmark Deputy Special


Representative for Central African Republic


United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Bo Schack of Denmark to serve as his Deputy Special Representative in the Central African Republic.  Mr. Schack will also serve as United Nations Resident Coordinator, Humanitarian Coordinator and Resident Representative.


Joining the newly established United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Office in the Central African Republic (BINUCA) at a critical period as the country prepares for legislative and presidential elections, Mr. Schack brings with him a wealth of development, humanitarian-assistance and leadership experience.


Prior to this appointment, he served in various positions with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), including UNHCR Representative in Burundi, from August 2007 to June 2009, and Head of the Policy Unit in the Europe Bureau at UNHCR Headquarters in Geneva, from July 2003 to July 2007.


Earlier in his career, Mr. Schack served as Deputy Chief of the UNHCR Mission in Tehran, Iran, and as Senior Protection Officer with UNHCR in Sri Lanka and the former Yugoslavia.


Mr. Schack holds a law degree from the University of Copenhagen, and a master’s in business administration from the Open University of the United Kingdom.


He was born in 1955.
