Security-Council Press Statement on Burundi
The following Security Council press statement on Burundi was read out today by Council President Nawaf Salam ( Lebanon):
The members of the Security Council commend the continued advances in the consolidation of peace in Burundi.
The members also commend the positive and constructive role that the National Independent Electoral Commission, the Burundian authorities, all the political parties, and the civil society are playing to ensure a successful electoral process in Burundi this year. The members encourage the international community to continue to provide timely and adequate support to the process.
The members of the Security Council call upon the Government of Burundi and all political stakeholders, with the support of the international community, to remain vigilant in order to prevent any risk of violence, especially between youth groups, before, during and after the elections in order to ensure a conducive and peaceful environment for the conduct of free, fair, transparent and credible elections and post-electoral periods.
The members of the Security Council welcome the new Executive Representative of the Secretary-General in Burundi, Mr. Charles Petrie, and reaffirm their support for the work of the United Nations Integrated Office in Burundi (BINUB), in line with its mandate adopted in resolution 1902 (2009).
The members of the Security Council reiterate their support for the Peacebuilding Commission and encourage it to continue to assist the Government of Burundi in laying the foundations for long-term development in Burundi and in mobilizing the support needed to consolidate peace and security.
