The following Security Council press statement on the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) was read out today by Council President Nawaf Salam (Lebanon):

The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the attacks on UNAMID peacekeepers in Darfur on 7 May, which resulted in the deaths of two Egyptian soldiers and left another three seriously wounded.

The members of the Security Council expressed their condolences to the families of those killed in the attacks, as well as to the Government of Egypt.  They encouraged the Government of Sudan to ensure that all the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice.

The members of the Security Council reiterated their full support for UNAMID and their call on all parties in Darfur to cooperate fully with the mission.
