Security Council Press Statement on Côte d’Ivoire

 

The following Security Council press statement on Côte d’Ivoire was read out today by Council President Emmanuel Issoze-Ngondet (Gabon):

The members of the Security Council were briefed by Mr. Y-J Choi, Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Côte d’Ivoire, on the situation in the country.

The members of the Security Council recalled their previous statements and expressed their concern at the continuing delays in the electoral process since January 2010.  They urged the Ivorian stakeholders to revive this process without delay and to remain within the framework of the Ouagadougou Political Agreement and of the previous peace agreements endorsed by the Security Council.  They commended and supported the role played by the Facilitator, President Blaise Compaoré of Burkina Faso, and encouraged him to continue his efforts to support the peace process in Côte d’Ivoire.  They commended also the role played by the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States.

The members of the Security Council further urged the Ivorian stakeholders to bring their full support to the work of the Independent Electoral Commission in order to complete the final voters list in the coming weeks.  They stressed that the provisional list of 5.3 million voters has been supported by the members of the Permanent Consultative Framework, certified by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and welcomed by the Security Council.  They stressed further that elections should be held as soon as possible and in accordance with the existing commitments agreed by all parties and supported by the Security Council in its resolution 1911 (2010).

The members of the Security Council called upon all Ivorians to refrain from the use of violence and to respect the full rights of their compatriots, including during the electoral process.  The members will follow up closely the situation, in particular the security conditions on the ground and the progress of the electoral process.
