Security Council Press Statement on Iraq Elections

The following Security Council press statement on the Iraq elections was issued today:

The members of the Security Council welcome the holding of parliamentary elections in Iraq on 7 March 2010.  The members look forward to the announcement of Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) certifying the election results, and express their appreciation to the Government of Iraq, including IHEC and Iraqi Security Forces, for their dedicated work in preparing and conducting these elections, supported by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

The members of the Security Council commend and congratulate the people of Iraq for demonstrating their continued commitment to a peaceful, inclusive and democratic political process.  The elections represent another important step in the political process aimed at strengthening Iraq’s national unity, sovereignty and independence.

The members of the Security Council reiterate that no terrorist act can reverse a path towards peace, democracy and reconstruction in Iraq, which is supported by the people and the Government of Iraq and the international community.  In this regard, the members of the Security Council condemn the actions of those who sought to deny the voice of the Iraqi people by attempting to disrupt the elections.
