The following press statement was issued today by Security Council President Mark Lyall Grant ( United Kingdom):

The members of the Security Council were briefed by Mr. Choi Young-Jin, Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Côte d’Ivoire, on the electoral process in the country.

The members of the Security Council welcomed the holding of the presidential election in Côte d’Ivoire on 31 October 2010.  They commended the Ivorian people for their massive and peaceful participation in this crucial vote, which represents a historic step towards the restoration of sustainable peace in Côte d’Ivoire.

The members of the Security Council urged all stakeholders to continue to be fully committed to a democratic, peaceful and transparent completion of the electoral process.  They stressed the central and critical role of the Independent Electoral Commission in proclaiming the provisional results of the vote as expeditiously as possible.

They further welcomed the role played by the United Nations Operation in Côte d’Ivoire in assisting the Independent Electoral Commission to overcome logistical challenges.

The members of the Security Council urged all candidates to maintain a calm and peaceful environment, and accept the results that will be proclaimed and certified through the established mechanisms.  They further urged the supporters of the candidates to refrain from any provocation or recourse to violence throughout the electoral process.

The members of the Security Council expressed their determination to continue to closely monitor the situation in Côte d’Ivoire, in particular the security conditions on the ground and the efforts to successfully conclude the electoral process.
