Security Council Increases Military, Police Contingents in Côte d’Ivoire

 

Operation, Unanimously Adopting Resolution 1942 (2010)

 

The Security Council this morning decided to authorize a temporary increase of 500 personnel for the military and police contingents of the United Nations Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI), recalling its intention to do so to contribute to security before, during and after elections.

Through the unanimous adoption of resolution 1942 (2010), the Council authorized the immediate deployment of those additional personnel, which would bring staffing levels from 8,650 to 9,150, for a period of up to six months.

Yesterday, after a briefing by Choi Young-jin, Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Côte d’Ivoire, the Council, in a press statement, congratulated Ivorian stakeholders on the 24 September certification of the final voters’ list for the polls.  (See Press Release SC/10043)

The Council urged those stakeholders to meet their commitments to organize the first round of the elections on 31 October, as agreed by all parties during a meeting of the Permanent Consultative Framework.

Today’s meeting was opened at 10:15 a.m. and closed at 10:20 a.m.

Resolution

The full text of resolution 1942 (2010) reads as follows:

“The Security Council,

“Recalling its previous resolution 1933 (2010) concerning Côte d’Ivoire and, in accordance with its paragraph 20, recalling its intention to consider raising for a limited period of time, prior to and after the elections, the level of authorized military and police personnel up to a total of no more than 500 additional personnel,

“Recalling the letter of the Secretary-General dated 14 September 2010 (S/2010/485) which recommended a temporary increase of the authorized military and police personnel of the United Nations Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI) from 8,650 to 9,150,

“Recalling the letter of its President dated 17 September 2010 (S/2010/486) which approved the course of action outlined in the above letter of the Secretary-General,

“Taking note of the establishment of the final voters list which was agreed upon by the Ivorian parties on 6 September 2010 and taking note of the certification of this voters list by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on 24 September 2010 in Abidjan as mentioned by the letter of the Secretary-General dated 23 September 2010 (S/2010/493),

“Acting under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations,

“1.   Decides to authorize, as recommended by the Secretary-General in his letter dated 14 September 2010 (S/2010/485), a temporary increase of UNOCI’s authorized military and police personnel from 8,650 to 9,150;

“2.   Authorizes the immediate deployment of those additional capacities for a period of up to six months;

“3.   Decides to remain actively seized of the matter.”
