Security Council Press Statement on Somalia
The following press statement on Somalia was issued today by Council President Vitaly Churkin (Russian Federation):
The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the attack on the Presidential Palace in Mogadishu on 30 August, which resulted in the death of four African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) peacekeepers.
The members of the Security Council expressed their condolences to the families of those killed in the attack, to the Government of Uganda, and to the African Union. The members of the Security Council reiterated their condemnation of all acts of violence and incitement to violence against civilians, AMISOM and the Transitional Federal Government.
The members of the Security Council strongly condemned the recent increased fighting in Somalia, reiterated their full support for the Transitional Federal Government, its efforts to achieve peace, security and reconciliation through the Djibouti Peace Process, and for the work of AMISOM. The members of the Security Council expressed their continued appreciation for the commitment of troops by the Governments of Burundi and Uganda.
The members of the Security Council stressed the importance of international assistance to train, equip and build the capacity of the Somali security forces and called upon the international community to provide additional resources to AMISOM in order for it to better fulfil its mandate.
