Central African Republic Configuration of Peacebuilding Commission
Adopts First Biannual Review of strategic Framework
The Central African Republic configuration of the Peacebuilding Commission this morning called for stepped-up inter-community dialogue in the north of the country and improved funding for security sector reform, as it adopted its first biannual review of the strategic framework for peacebuilding.
The review of the Strategic Framework for Peacebuilding in the Central African Republic, the conclusions of which are contained in document PBC/4/CAF/L.1, was the result of two review processes conducted in parallel, one in New York and one in Bangui, according to the configuration’s Chairman, Jan Grauls of Belgium.
Among other recommendations in the review directed at the Government was the need to fully implement the action plan for security sector reform; to agree on the use of funds for disarmament, demobilization and reintegration; and to make all efforts to bring about free, fair, credible and timely elections in 2010.
In regard to international partners, the Central African Republic configuration resolved to strengthen assistance to the Government for the implementation of the results of the inclusive political dialogue and for the election process, and to support the ongoing establishment of the United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Office in the Central African Republic (BINUCA).
Also this morning, Ejeviome Eloho Otobo, Director and Deputy Head of Office, Peacebuilding Support Office, announced that the Secretary-General had approved the release of the second tranche of funds for the Central African Republic from the Peacebuilding Trust Fund, representing an additional $20 million from that mechanism.
Sahle-Work Zewde, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the Central African Republic, participated in the meeting from Bangui via tele-video connection.
The Central African Republic Configuration of the Peacebuilding Commission will meet again at a time and place to be announced.
