Photo Exhibit in Observance of International Day of Solidarity
with Palestinian People Opens 29 November
A photo exhibition entitled “Summer Games in Gaza” will be launched at 6 p.m. on Monday, 29 November, in the North East gallery of the Visitors Lobby. This exhibit, presented by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), under the auspices of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, is organized in connection with the annual observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.
In 2010, for the fourth consecutive year, UNRWA staged its “Summer Games” programme, providing six weeks of recreational, cultural and educational activities to some 250,000 children, most of them refugees, in the Gaza Strip. In partnership with local non-governmental organizations, thousands of United Nations staff gave up their summer vacations to give children in Gaza a chance to have fun and enjoy a normal summer, even under most abnormal circumstances.
During this year’s games, the children of Gaza broke two Guinness World Records, for kite flying and basketball bouncing, bringing impressive images out to the international community.
This exhibition pays tribute to the character and resilience of Palestinian children living under blockade, to the dedication of United Nations humanitarian workers in Gaza and to the supporters of that work in the wider international community.
The exhibit opening will feature a theatrical performance, “Gaza Mono-Logues”, by young Palestinian actors representing different countries in response to the attack on Gaza that occurred in the winter of 2008-2009.
The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is observed in accordance with the provisions of the General Assembly resolution 32/40 B of 2 December 1977.
