Making Appointments to Committee on Conferences, Committee for Programme

 

Coordination, General Assembly Fills Vacancies in Subsidiary Bodies

 

The General Assembly, through elections and appointments, today filled vacancies in the Committee for Programme and Coordination, the main subsidiary body of the Assembly and the Economic and Social Council for such work, as well as in the Committee on Conferences, which advises the Assembly on all matters pertaining to the organization of United Nations conferences.

Acting on the recommendation of the Economic and Social Council, the Assembly elected by acclamation Algeria, Antigua and Barbuda, Benin, China, Eritrea and the Republic of Korea to the Committee on Programme Coordination for three-year terms, beginning on 1 January 2011.  They fill vacancies that will occur on 31 December 2010, as a result of the expiration of the terms of office of Bangladesh, China, Jamaica, Kenya, Libya, Niger and the Republic of Korea.

They join Committee members Argentina, Armenia, Belarus, Brazil, Central African Republic, Comoros, Cuba, Guinea, Haiti, India, Iran, Israel, Italy, Kazakhstan, Namibia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Russian Federation, South Africa, Spain, Ukraine, Uruguay and Venezuela.

The States were elected according to the following pattern:  three seats among the African States; three seats among the Asian States; and one seat among the Latin American and Caribbean States.  The Assembly postponed the nomination of one member from the Asian States, deciding it would be in a position to act on that vacancy upon nomination by the Council of Member States from that region.

Also today, the President of the General Assembly, Joseph Deiss, acting on the recommendation of regional groups, appointed Austria, China, Ethiopia, Japan, Libya and the United States as members of the Committee on Conferences for three-year terms beginning on 1 January 2011.  They will fill vacancies arising on 31 December 2010 from the expired terms of office for Argentina, Austria, China, Japan, Kenya, Tunisia and the United States.  The Assembly President urged that a candidate be submitted for the vacant seat among the Latin American and Caribbean States.

The Committee on Conferences is a permanent subsidiary organ of the Assembly and is composed of 21 members appointed by the President of the Assembly, after consultations with the chairmen of the regional groups, for a period of three years.  One-third of the Committee’s membership retires annually.  Retiring members are eligible for reappointment.

The General Assembly will reconvene at 10 a.m. on Thursday, 11 November to consider the report of the Security Council.
