Deputy Secretary-General Calls for Continued Momentum to Forge True Turning Point

for Women, Children, at Event to Launch Global Strategy for Their Health

Following are UN Deputy Secretary-General Asha Rose-Migiro’s closing remarks to the special event to launch the Global Strategy for Women’s and Children’s Health, “Every Woman, Every Child”, in New York, yesterday, 22 September:

I am inspired by all of you, major players here together — high-level Government officials, foundations, corporate partners, non-governmental activists, concerned individuals — joining forces for the world’s women and children.

I am even more encouraged by what you have brought — new commitments, significant financial resources, the promise of better policies, plans to improve services.  This is exactly what we need for the Global Strategy to succeed.

And another reason for optimism, dear friends, is the establishment of UN Women and the appointment of Ms. [Michelle] Bachelet to lead this new entity, which will drive forward, with renewed vigour, our work on gender equality and the empowerment of women.  All of the above translate into hope for countless women and children in our world.

Today marks a crucial first step, but it is exactly that – a big first step — on a long road to stop maternal deaths, prevent childhood diseases and save lives.  Progress depends on converting today’s momentum into concrete action.  We owe it to the women and children whose lives depend on us.

So I thank you, but I also urge you: keep this momentum going.  Bring in your partners, your associates, your communities.  Help us make what has happened in this room and in 2010 a true turning point for the world’s most vulnerable women and children.

Thank you all so much.
