Austria to Host Meeting on Cooperation in Promoting Implementation
of Security Council Resolution 1540 (2004), 15-16 December
International, regional and subregional organizations will participate in a meeting on cooperation in promoting the implementation of United Nations Security Council resolution 1540 (2004) at the Hofburg Congress Centre in Vienna, Austria, from 15 to 16 December.
Hosted by the Government of Austria and organized in cooperation with the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA), the meeting will bring together, for the first time, representatives from 16 international organizations, including United Nations entities, and 12 regional and subregional bodies, in addition to representatives and experts of the Security Council’s 1540 Committee. Participants will outline their respective organizations’ specific policies and practices for promoting the implementation of resolution 1540 (2004) while sharing experiences and lessons learned. The meeting will also address issues of continued cooperation and interaction among organizations.
By its adoption of resolution 1810 (2008), the Security Council requested the 1540 Committee to provide opportunities for interaction with relevant international, regional and subregional organizations to promote the implementation of resolution 1540 (2004). Similarly, the Final Document on the 2009 Comprehensive Review of the Status of Implementation of Security Council resolution 1540 (2004) calls upon the Committee to “create more formal and informal cooperative arrangements with international, regional, subregional and multilateral institutions, to facilitate the sharing of information on good practices, lessons learned, to develop and implement standards, and identify assistance requirements and programmes”. In expanding working relations among participating organizations, the Vienna meeting will contribute to the strengthening of cooperation among the 1540 Committee and international, regional and subregional organizations.
