New Permanent Representative of Spain Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Spain to the United Nations, Juan Pablo de Laiglesia, today presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Mr. de Laiglesia was appointed Secretary of State for Foreign and Latin American Affairs in July 2010, prior to which he served from 2009 as Secretary of State for Latin American Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.  He was Secretary-General of the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation from 2004.

In 1993, Mr. Laiglesia was appointed Ambassador-at-Large for the coordination of relations with European neighbouring countries, having previously served as Ambassador-at-Large for peacekeeping operations in 1996.

His diplomatic postings included service as Ambassador to Poland between 1998 and 2003, Ambassador to Mexico from 1992 to 1996 and Ambassador to Guatemala from 1988 to 1992.  In 1977, Mr. Laiglesia was Charge d’Affaires at the United Nations in Geneva, where he also served as First Secretary and Charge d’Affaires in 1976.  In 1973, he was Second Secretary at Spain’s Embassy in Colombia.

Mr. Laiglesia also served from 1985 to 1988 as Director General of Foreign Policy for Latin America with the then Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Deputy Director General for Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean Countries (1984–1985); Director of International Economic Relations with Africa and the Middle East (1983–1984); and Director of International Economic Relations with America (1982–1983).

Educated at the Diplomatic School in Madrid, Mr. Laiglesia holds degrees in law and international studies.
