Miloš Koterec of Slovakia Chair of First Committee

 

Miloš Koterec, Permanent Representative of Slovakia to the United Nations, was elected Chair of the First Committee (Disarmament and International Security) on 11 June 2010.  (See Press Release GA/10947)

Mr. Koterec has served as his country’s Permanent Representative since September 2009.  At the time of his appointment, Mr. Koterec was a member of the European Parliament since 2004.  Prior to his election to the European Parliament, he served in his country’s Mission to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), starting in 2001 as Counsellor and ending as Deputy Permanent Representative in 2004.

From 1999 until 2001, Mr. Koterec served in the Foreign Ministry’s Department for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Disarmament and Council of Europe, first as Chief of the Disarmament Section and in 2000 as Director.  From 1995 until 1999 he worked at the Permanent Mission of Slovakia to the United Nations in New York, first as Second Secretary, and in 1998 as First Secretary and Acting Deputy Chief of Mission.  He started his civil servant career in 1993 as Chief of the United Nations Section in the Department of the United Nations and Other International Organizations in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Mr. Koterec was an assistant lecturer at the Faculty of Electrotechnical Engineering and Informatics at the Slovak Technical University in Bratislava from 1989 to 1993.

He obtained a Master of Science in electrotechnical engineering and informatics from the Slovak Technical University in Bratislava in 1986 and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Economy, Bratislava, in 1992.  He also studied international relations and diplomacy at the Commenius University, Bratislava, from 1992 to 1994.

Born in 1962 in Partizánske, Slovakia, Mr. Koterec has two children.
