Biographical Note

New Permanent Representative of Sweden Presents Credentials

Mårten Grunditz, the new Permanent Representative of Sweden to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Grunditz served as Secretary-General of the Swedish European Union Presidency Secretariat beginning in 2008.  He also served as the Ambassador to Greece in Athens from 2002 to 2008.

From 1998 to 2002, he was the Head of the European Union Department and Deputy Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  Mr. Grunditz also served as Chargé d’Affaires in London from 1997 to 1998.  Earlier, he served as Minister in the embassies in London (1993‑97) and Geneva (1991-93), as well as Counsellor, Deputy Permanent Representative to the European Free Trade Association in Geneva (1987‑91).

Having begun his diplomatic career in 1973 as an attaché in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs assigned to Moscow, Mr. Gunditz held posts in the Ministry as Second Secretary, North American Trade Affairs (1975‑76), First Secretary, Trade and Commercial Affairs in Beijing (1976‑78), and First Secretary, Trade Policy Affairs in Washington, D.C., (1978‑82).  Subsequently, he served at the Foreign Ministry in Stockholm as Head of Section for International Energy Affairs (1982‑83), the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (1983‑85) and East Asia and Oceania Affairs (1985‑87).

He obtained his master’s degree in political science from the University of Uppsala.  He also completed military service from 1969 to 1970, serving as a non-commissioned officer in the area of army intelligence.

Born in Växjö, Sweden, in 1949, he is married and has two children.
