New Permanent Representative of Fiji Presents Credentials

Peter Thomson, the new Permanent Representative of Fiji to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Thomson was an investment and management consultant from 1988 to 2009, specializing in Pacific island affairs, with clients including Government agencies, regional organizations, banks, universities and investment corporations.

Before his involvement with private enterprise, he spent 16 years as a civil servant, serving most recently as Permanent Secretary to the Governor-General of Fiji from May 1987 until his resignation from the civil service.

Previously Permanent Secretary for Information from 1986 to 1987, Mr. Thomson also spent several years with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, his last posting being Consul-General in Sydney, Australia, in 1984.  From 1980 to 1984, he was in Tokyo, Japan, where he was Chargé d’Affaires responsible for opening Fiji’s Embassy, and subsequently First Secretary in charge of aid, trade and tourism.  He worked in the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat in 1979.

Mr. Thomson has a post-graduate diploma in development studies from the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom, and a Bachelor of Arts in political studies from Auckland University, New Zealand.

Born in 1948 in Suva, Fiji, he is married and has two children.
