United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon arrived in Singapore from Tokyo, Japan, in the late afternoon of Thursday, 2 July.

He first met with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and then had a working dinner with Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong.

The Secretary-General and the Prime Minister reaffirmed the long-standing ties and strong cooperation between Singapore and the United Nations, and exchanged views on various challenges facing the international community, including the economic crisis.

They also discussed the Secretary-General’s forthcoming visit to Myanmar, and the Prime Minister reiterated Singapore’s support for the good offices of the Secretary-General and Special Adviser Ibrahim Gambari’s work on Myanmar.

Over a working dinner, the Secretary-General and the Senior Minister discussed Singapore’s perspective on developments in Myanmar. The Senior Minister emphasized the important role that the United Nations could play to help bring about national reconciliation in Myanmar by engaging all the stakeholders.

The Secretary-General left Singapore early on Friday morning for Myanmar.

In Somalia, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported that more than 124,000 people have been impacted by seasonal rains. The United Nations, with its partners, have pre-positioned supplies in nearly two dozen hotspot districts to meet the needs of nearly 770,000 people who are expected to be impacted.
