Secretary-General Deplores Today’s Deadly Attack on Peacekeepers in North Darfur
The following statement was issued today by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:
On 4 December at approximately 4:15 p.m. local time, a military convoy of the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) escorting a water tanker, was ambushed by unidentified armed assailants at Saraf Umra in North Darfur. Two peacekeepers were killed in the attack, a third subsequently died from his wounds, and several others were wounded.
The Secretary-General deplores this attack on African Union-United Nations peacekeepers in Darfur and calls on the Government of the Sudan to do its utmost to ensure that the perpetrators are swiftly identified and brought to justice.
The Secretary-General expresses his condolences to the families of the peacekeepers who lost their lives, and reiterates his appreciation for their service and commitment to the search for peace in Darfur.
