Secretary-General Welcomes Adoption of Security Council Resolution 1888 (2009)
The following statement was issued this evening by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:
The Secretary-General welcomes the unanimous adoption today by the Security Council of resolution 1888 (2009), which aims to further strengthen the efforts of the international community to combat sexual violence in armed conflict. This resolution represents an unequivocal call for action, building on resolution 1820 (2008). This earlier resolution sets an important precedent by recognizing the links between sexual violence in armed conflict and its aftermath, and sustainable peace and security.
The Secretary-General reiterates his full commitment to ensuring that the provisions of both resolutions are implemented in partnership with all relevant stakeholders and calls for the Security Council’s continued engagement to eradicate sexual violence.
