SECRETARY-GENERAL CONDEMNS HOLOCAUST DENIAL, JOINS IN REMEMBERING MILLIONS OF VICTIMS OF NAZIS, ON EVE OF HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:

As Israel, Jews throughout the world and others prepare to observe Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, the Secretary-General joins in remembering the millions of victims of the Nazis who suffered atrocious acts of discrimination, cruelty and murder.  He condemns Holocaust denial and those who minimize the importance of the Holocaust, recalling that in 2007, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution stating that “ignoring the historical fact of those terrible events increases the risk they will be repeated”.  And he urges the international community to intensify efforts to combat genocide and the other grave violations of human rights that continue to plague our world.  He urges all to speak out in the face of racism and hatred.
