Secretary-General Appoints Jerzy Skuratowicz of Poland

 

Deputy Special Representative for Iraq

 


United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Jerzy Skuratowicz of Poland as his Deputy Special Representative for Iraq.  Mr. Skuratowicz will head the political, electoral and constitutional support component of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).  He will replace Andrew Gilmour, who has taken up a new appointment as Head of Office in Belgrade.  The Secretary-General is grateful to Mr. Gilmour for his dedicated service and commitment to assisting the people of Iraq.


Mr. Skuratowicz will bring with him a wealth of experience in dealing with policy dialogue, conflict prevention, constitutional reform, electoral assistance, governance, rule of law and capacity development.


Mr. Skuratowicz currently serves as the Deputy Regional Director a.i., for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Africa Subregional Office for Western and Central Africa.  He has also served as UNDP Country Director in the Sudan and as UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in the Kyrgyzstan.


Before joining UNDP, Mr. Skuratowicz held a distinguished career in academia and has published over 40 publications, research papers and expertise on transition problems in Central and Eastern Europe, and socio-political and economic problems in developing countries, including the Middle East and North Africa.


Born in 1946, Mr. Skuratowicz holds a master’s degree in macroeconomics from the University of Warsaw, and a doctorate in development economics from the University of Warsaw and the American University in Washington, D.C.


He is married and has two daughters.
