SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS MAJOR GENERAL FLORIANO PEIZOTO VIERA NETO (BRAZIL)


AS FORCE COMMANDER OF UNITED NATIONS STABILIZATION MISSION IN HAITI

 


UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Major General Floriano Peixoto Vieira Neto of Brazil as Force Commander of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH).  Major General Floriano Peixoto will replace the outgoing Force Commander Major General Carlos Alberto dos Santos Cruz of Brazil on 9 April.  The Secretary-General appreciates Major General Santos Cruz’s outstanding performance while serving in MINUSTAH, where his dedication, professionalism and leadership greatly contributed to the United Nations stabilization efforts in Haiti.


Major General Floriano Peixoto will bring extensive leadership and operational experience with him when he assumes his responsibilities in MINUSTAH.  Joining the Brazilian Army in 1973, he graduated as an infantry officer in 1976 and subsequently has had a distinguished military career, holding a number of senior command and staff positions.  He is presently Head of the Army Staff’s Fifth Sub-Directorate.  As a Colonel, he commanded the sixty-second Infantry Battalion (Rapid Reaction Force) in the Southern Army Command, from 2000 to 2001.  In 2004, when Brazil sent its first contingent to MINUSTAH, he was appointed as the Brigade’s Operations Officer.  After being promoted to general rank in 2006, Major General Floriano Peixoto was assigned the Command of the twelfth Infantry Brigade (Air Assault), a position that he held until 2008. 


Major General Floriano Peixoto graduated from the Brazilian Army Command and General Staff College and the Brazilian Army War College.  He has had wide-ranging command and staff experience, which also includes experiences as an instructor at the Military Academy, Airborne School, Command and General Staff College and, from 1996 to 1998, as a Brazilian Army Liaison Officer to the United States Military Academy ( West Point).  Born in 1954, Major General Floriano Peixoto is married and has two children.
