Security Council Committee on Somalia Deplores Intimidation,

 

Interference with Work of Monitoring Group

 

The Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 751 (1992) concerning Somalia received a letter dated 8 December 2009 from the Coordinator of the Monitoring Group on Somalia informing the Committee that a number of threats and warnings directed at the members of the Monitoring Group (based in Nairobi, Kenya) were made by unknown sources.  The Kenyan authorities are investigating the threat.

It will be recalled that the Monitoring Group is responsible for investigating threats to the peace, security or stability of Somalia, including possible violations of the general and complete arms embargo on Somalia imposed by Security Council resolution 733 (1992), and acts that may obstruct the delivery of, access to or distribution of humanitarian assistance in Somalia.

The Committee deplores such acts of intimidation and interference with the Monitoring Group’s work.  It further urges Member States to extend full cooperation with the investigation of the Monitoring Group, and to provide the necessary assistance to ensure that its activities continue unhindered.
