Security Council Press Statement on Somalia

 

The following Security Council press statement on Somalia was read out today by Council President Thomas Mayr-Harting ( Austria):

In accordance with paragraph 26 of resolution 1844 (2008) on Somalia, the Security Council conducted a review of the measures set out in paragraphs 1, 3 and 7 of that resolution.  The members of the Security Council have also received a briefing from Ambassador Claude Heller of Mexico, Chairman of the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 751 (1992) concerning Somalia.

The Security Council noted that the measures in paragraphs 1, 3 and 7 of resolution 1844 remain necessary to address the situation in Somalia, which continues to constitute a threat to international peace and security in the region.

The members of the Security Council reiterated their support for the Djibouti Peace Process outlined in the Transitional Federal Charter, which provides a framework for reaching a lasting political solution in Somalia.

The members of the Security Council strongly condemned the recent increased fighting and loss of life in Somalia, and reiterated their continued and full support to the Transitional Federal Government, its efforts to achieve peace, security and reconciliation through the Djibouti Peace Process, and the work of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).

The members of the Security Council stressed the importance of international assistance to train and equip the Somali forces, in close coordination with AMISOM.
